Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, It's Off to Smoke and Drink We Go
A recent study by the Harvard School of Public Health found a disturbing amount of alcohol or tobacco use in animated movies from 1937 to 2000. Here are some of the worst offenders:
The Last Unicorn (1982)
A drunken unicorn flails around and impales a rabbit.
Pokémon: The First Movie (1999)
Charmander sets ablaze a tray of flaming cocktails.
Fantasia (1940)
Features a "Dance of the Sugar Plumb Ashtrays" sequence.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington staggers out of bed with a fierce hangover, vomits painfully into a toilet, then stares wordlessly at his own haggard face in a mirror for three full minutes.
Chicken Run (2000)
Rocky Rhodes lights up a joint while making a "chicken pot pie" pun.
The Iron Giant (1999)
A robot leaves his pack of cigarettes in outer space and shakes with mechanical nicotine fits.
Charlottes Web (1973)
A drunken Wilbur breaks down into sobs and accuses a goose of never having loved him. When the goose tries to calm him, he runs off into the woods and returns four days later, sullen and unshaven.
The Transformers: The Movie (1986)
The character "Zippotron" changes from a robot into a cigarette lighter.
Peter Pan (1953)
Peter Pan, during a tense standoff with Captain Hook, mutters, "God, I need a fuckin cigarette."
An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991)
Fievel is a hopelessly alcoholic mouse who moves to Las Vegas to drink himself to death.
