In 1840, William Henry Harrison, a Whig, defeated the incumbent Martin Van Buren, a Democrat, to become the ninth President of the United States.
On March 4, 1841, a cold and rainy day, the 68-year-old wanted to prove his stamina as the "log cabin and hard cider" candidate. Harrison delivered his 1 hour and 40-minute inauguration speech (the longest on record) without wearing a hat or coat, then went on to attend three inaugural balls that night.
Over the next few weeks, the cold he developed worsened until the President was sick with pneumonia. On April 4, after one month in office, he died.
During this fateful month, ex-President Martin Van Buren, fuming over his defeat, left the below series of phone messages on Harrison's voicemail.
